The result is the OOB<a href="https://tracksandthreads.wordpress.com/2015/09/25/polish-mechanised-division/"> over here</a> and here are some pictures.<br />

Well, another club member who has an odd penchant for thinking about what medieval Byzantium may look like in any period you care to name, followed suit and built Byzantium's imaginary forces in the Cold war, taking a lead from the forces of the Cold War "border neutrals" like Austria, Finland and Yugoslavia. The army Order of Battle is described <a href="http://novobyzantium.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/this-is-part-5-of-what-has-turned-out.html">over here</a> and here are some pictures....</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
As with all Imagi-Nations, borders are quite vague - so vague in fact that these two nations find they are in dispute over their joint border, and tensions are rising - there are fears that there may well be a full scale border "Incident" in the very near future....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>So you want to build your own Imagi-Nation? </i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Imagi-Nations are great fun for combining equipment you otherwise don't see together, or "what if" organisation structures, and 1:300 scale means even building a decent sized force is not exorbitant (in Fistful of TOWS, one model or one infantry stand represents a
platoon sized unit, so a battalion is usually c 9 - 12 models). Even less so if you build it out from a core force, say a Soviet or US supplied core force in this era. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
How do you do it? Simple - Invent a country, imagine a history, build an army, and assert your right to rule :) There are fellow Iamgi-Nation enthusiasts in most periods, TMP has a section "<a href="http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/topics.mv?id=273">Modern What-Ifs</a>" where they gather for this period. </div>

Rules are the General de Brigade variant called British Grenadier. Rules are written for AWI, but have a lot of mechanisms that suit the WSS and SYW. We were play testing to see if the rules worked and broadly they did what we hoped. Will need to tweak, but all war gamers want to tweak rules!<br />

<br />
Last night I had the pleasure in playing another of Phil Andrew's ‘Crazy
Horse’s Fury’ Plains War games where my brave Hunkpapa Sioux took on the
2nd Cavalry to prevent them moving a wagon over a creek and off the
table – no doubt for various nefarious reasons.<br />
The US force was of 4 companies of cavalry, 2 Veterans and 2 new
recruits, with a Crow Scout troop and a wagon containing something or
other (either the payroll or working cartridges, we couldn’t decide
which!). They were controlled by Philip and Darren.<br />
I controlled 4 bands of Sioux, 2 were Warriors and 2 were ‘Boys’ –
not great at shooting as they had yet to obtain rifles but very game and
eager to get stuck in!<br />
<figure class="wp-caption aligncenter" data-shortcode="caption" id="attachment_246" style="width: 450px;"><a href="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_193207.jpg"><img alt="Field of the action with 'my' side of the creek nearest the camera - the Wagon had to be exited anywhere on this edge." class=" wp-image-246" height="261" src="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_193207.jpg?w=450&h=261" width="450" /></a><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Field of the action with ‘my’ side of the creek nearest the camera – the Wagon had to be exited anywhere on this edge.</figcaption></figure>
I was allowed to set up each warband either in cover or behind a hill
so that they were not visible to the yellow-legs until they got close
enough to try and see me (needed to get 4-6 if the Crow’s, and 5 or 6 if
‘regular’ troopers I think). I duly marked the map and hoped my cunning
plan was cunning enough – the two older Warbands were placed in the
‘rough’ ground (brighter green patches) to the left and the furthest
right of the table with one of the Boys bands hidden in the copse by the
creek, the last band was behind the right hand hill on ‘my’ side of the
creek either to be used as a reserve or as a last gasp ambush attempt
on the wagon if everyone else got mullered earlier!<br />
These rules are a good deal of fun and whilst being simple have
enough subtleties to make them really interesting. Each unit has to draw
a commander chit which has a characteristic on it that will either
bring a benefit or hindrance to their units’ performance. For example my
old mate ‘Talkheaps’ was drawn for one of my Warbands which meant that
instead of automatic activation I had to roll a d6, get a 1 and the unit
was inactive that go (the Cavalry drew their own version of this: ‘West
Pointer’). The Cavalry are quite lethal once they get dismounted and
start firing plus they have longer range than the Indians but the
Indians can move further each go and can Move, Fire and Move in a turn
(instead of just Move and Fire) which gives them more fluidity, plus
they are a bit more lethal in melee so both sides have their pluses and
minuses.<br />
I won’t be able to do a blow-by-blow account of the battle as it was
really fluid all the way through, (again one of the great things about
this game) but here’s the basic outline. After the Crow’s nearly spotted
my left hand band I decided to break cover with them and leg it over
the creek, planning to either draw a unit after them so that the waiting
Boys in the copse for could spring an ambush or if that didn’t happen
to go into reserve to be used where needed. Over on the right Darren’s
troops were getting mighty close to spotting my braves so I sprang an
ambush which managed to hit home but I started an unbelievably inept
sequence of rolls in melee, so the attack was quite ineffectual. The
Crow scouts and a Company then started probing towards the woods and I
unleashed the Boys from there in another surprise attack – again they
charged home on Blue-bellies but again not with the desired effect.<br />
<figure class="wp-caption aligncenter" data-shortcode="caption" id="attachment_253" style="width: 352px;"><a href="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_193335.jpg"><img alt="Some of the damn Yellow-legs prepare to escort the wagon." class=" wp-image-253" height="203" src="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_193335.jpg?w=352&h=203" width="352" /></a><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Some of the damn Yellow-legs prepare to escort the wagon. From this moment on the battle ended up as a series of moves to
contact from the Indians with which I failed to do much damage from
the melee; or the Cavalry would move into range to unleash a volley at
me and roll a 1 or 2 (honestly they rolled about ten 1’s all night!)
hence causing no casualties; or I would move into range, fire, get a 5
or 6 forcing the Cavalry unit back, then retire myself to keep out of
range. I therefore managed to hold the line of the Creek whilst forcing
the Wagon to withdraw to prevent it from being captured.<br />
<figure class="wp-caption aligncenter" data-shortcode="caption" id="attachment_263" style="width: 300px;"><a href="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_202136.jpg"><img alt="Braves pushed back to the creek." class="size-medium wp-image-263" height="169" src="https://tracksandthreads.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/20151005_202136.jpg?w=300&h=169" width="300" /></a><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Boys charge out of the Copse</figcaption></figure>

I did manage to rout away one Cavalry unit with a successful charge
by the boys, this Company being wiped out by fire when it returned but
the boys came a cropper themselves when they tried to evict the Crows
from the Copse and nearly got cleaned out themselves. Over on the
other flank the other boys band had a terribly ineffectual in the rocks
with some veteran cavalry and retired back behind the creek. By the end
the Cavalry had started to unjam their rifles and cause losses on the
braves so I started to fall back further and further, now not being
strong enough to cause much damage myself. As time was getting on we
called the game and I believe a morale victory was gained by the Indians
as the Cavalry failed to get the wagon off the table but I had suffered
quite a lot of casualties in the process.<br />

<i>"I was proceeding on my duties in the vicinity of the Old Vlad Grange
ruins when my attention was drawn to one Mimi Mouson (formerly Elsie
Bagshaw of E14) the reknowned music hall artiste. Miss Mouson was being
chained to a rock by a hooded and robed figure later identified as Grand
Dark Master Zooban aka Reginald Spoke of 15 Victory Road where he lives
with his Mother ('it all just started as bit of fun officer...') . A
number of other suspicious characters were also in the vicinity,
namely: a large armoured figure emitting whirring and clicking noises; a
gentleman of middle eastern extraction who clearly should still be in
hospital due to his injuries and the moans of pain: and a set of fellows
I can only describe as: French. I therefore adopted standard
procedure of arming myself with my notebook and declaring: 'Oi you lot,
you're nicked'. At this point a fracas broke out...."</i><br />
<br />
And so
with these words from PC Dorkins, we start our tale of the most shocking
events of recent times that led to the death of one of the great
characters of our era. <br />
<br />
In the middle of the great ruins of Vlad
Grange, Mimi is chained to a rock and is the focus of an arcane ritual
led by the hooded Master wielding an ancient artefact. Several
supporters watch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/rum9gmlpux2qclf/AAAancFmcHYoCCWqe1gYugOpa?raw=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/rum9gmlpux2qclf/AAAancFmcHYoCCWqe1gYugOpa?raw=1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Besides PC Dorkins and other members of Scotland Yard, other parties wish to intervene.....<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mu0epj687hzgsfn/AACY-fXQlgiG6KjT4CX9gyMMa?raw=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mu0epj687hzgsfn/AACY-fXQlgiG6KjT4CX9gyMMa?raw=1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The
Cult of Amun (above) are here to seize the artefact and kill the Master and his
supporters on the principle that the crazy cult market is already over
supplied. The French Foreign Legion Compagnie d’ Extraordinaire are here (below) because Col
Croissant taken a real shine to Mimi er.. is seeking to remove the
artefact from evil hands. El She-bab the Compagnie's mysterious desert
scout has his own agenda: to kill as many of the Amun as possible. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/1idgxrlt7frup5r/AADrJ2Znti-bNA7-key2upF7a?raw=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/1idgxrlt7frup5r/AADrJ2Znti-bNA7-key2upF7a?raw=1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fresh off a lurking Zeppelin, the Panzerclockwerken Sturmtruppen
Abteilung (below) are also here to seize the artefact for the Kaiser. Oh and
killing as many Frenchmen as possible 'iz alvays a gut idea!'. They
also have a bonus for killing the French professor who is a rival in
robot design.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mhfzjfkw18c9l3w/AACMN94F4Oi6emQL_77b1li-a?raw=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/mhfzjfkw18c9l3w/AACMN94F4Oi6emQL_77b1li-a?raw=1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally (below) the boys in blue with the assistance of the Great Detective are trying to make sense of it all, rescue the girl and arrest the Master and his accomplices.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/5vnd3nrkdzv6c5k/AACozvAGjjfVKE2bKNQeIGxfa?raw=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt=" " border="0" height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/5vnd3nrkdzv6c5k/AACozvAGjjfVKE2bKNQeIGxfa?raw=1" style="max-width: 100%;" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The fracas commences: <br />
<br />
The Prussians move in at speed with their
fearsome clockwork robots, their key wielding operators puffing with the effort to stay close behind, and
with cover fire from a lonely jager. However in a rare logistical
error the Hun has only one shot per bot from their Congreve rocket guns as some dolt forget zem on der Zeppelin!
(points adding up fail, forgot he had to pay for the grenades). <br />
<br />
In
early gun play the Bobbies just annoy the mummies while the Arc rifles
of the French are just what are needed to negate the armour of the
Hunbots: a clockwork man goes down in a flurry of sparks but a barrage
of Congreve rocket-grenades in return kills some legionnaires and knocks
down the French Professor and so incapacitates the French robot. <br />
<br />
One
grenade is clearly made by Acme of Hamburg as it corkscrews out of the
gun (rolled a 1) and comes with a whisker of landing on the firer (then
rolled a 2). <br />
<br />
The French professor fails roll after pluck roll
to stand up, so much so that the Prussian’s start up that well know
Munich beer hall tune: “He gets knocked down und he does not get up
again , we vill always keep you down, he takes a schnapps drink, he takes a
lager drink…”<br />
<br />
El She-bab makes dash and rescues Mimi, making her
day: being chained to a rock and being worshipped was fun while it
lasted, but being whisked off her feet by the suave Arabian Prince is one
story to tell the chorus girls. <br />
<br />
The civilian cult supporters
scatter at random at the sound of firing/lightning bolts/Germanic
singing. One is mercilessly gunned down by the French, two conveniently
run towards the Police. The fourth flourish his warrant card from his
pocket and reveals himself to be Atkins of Special Branch on undercover
duties: he steps forth to clap handcuffs on the hooded Master.<br />
<br />
Two
other civilians are arrested (aka beaten in a fight) by Scotland
Yard’s finest, and they feel all is going well as they haul the prisoners
back to the Station. Only the girl needs rescuing from the clutches
of the dastardly French and so <strike>Benedict</strike> Sherly and Doc are dispatched to deal
with that. <br />
<br />
Their task is made considerably easier when the
sniping Jager fells El She-bab leaving Mimi in a dead faint on the
ground. More exchanges leave the French severely depleted but the Hun
are equally suffering, down to one automaton with the mechanic/operators
busily trying to fix the rest to the sound of Hamburgian cursing and
springs going ‘boing’. The situation is made worse as Sergeant Baguette,
trusty rifle in hand (none of this arc new fangled nonsense for him),
takes out the Prussian colonel and the Jager.<br />

<article><br /><div class="message">
At this point it becomes a little confusing but there three main areas of action…<br />
<br />
In
one corner the Cults of Amun mummies and tribal warriors are making the
previously smooth exit of the bobbies and their prisoners somewhat
awkward. An unlucky PC Dorkins is frozen in terror as the resurrected
Nefatari calls on Heart Rending powers and reaches her talons into his
chest. Holding her hand high she cackles; only to realise she is holding
not a beating heart but Dorkin’s emergency winter warmer flask - ‘oi
that was birthday present…’ he cries over his shoulder at a gallop.
Enraged, Nefertari beheads one of Dorkins' colleagues with a single
swipe of a poisoned Ankh. <br />
<br />
A melee develops over the Master and
his artefact, a situation complicated as is he still handcuffed to a
Special Branch Officer who has been knocked down by a be-fezzed
supporter of Amun. Around him stand more Special Branch officers, the
last working Hunbots, and several fez wearing types. After some vicious
hand to hand (and hand to steam claw) action, the Anumites kill the Master and
the deadly dwarf hits a vital steam pipe on a robot, while the remaining
clockworkian monster stomps off with the artefact towards the Zeppelin rendezvous
point, though as it used a steam claw to grab it, the artefact is still
attached to a significant part of the Master’s arm. </div>
<div class="message">
<br />
<img alt=" " height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/c6r3zqdll4r6leb/AABEMDkhumi_Gocu2O8owIy-a?raw=1" style="max-width: 100%;" width="400" /> <br />
<br />
Colonel
Croissant has now grabbed Mimi and supported by the now working
French robot and Corporal Éclair and his mule Mouffin (Mouffin carries
the Companies arc generator for the arc rifles and has a kick of his
own) faces deadly foes: Sherly and the Doc, and the evil priest
Pinudjem and his very deadly dwarf assassin side kick. Somehow with a
blast of steam and a flourish of his sabre, le Colonel not only survives
but the robot stomps the dwarf. For his next trick he exchanges words
of wit and candour with the Great Detective and then plunges his sabre
through that well know caped coat, felling Holmes (and to the annoyance
of his player before he remembered to use his Meticulous Planning
talent…Curses!). Watson follows shortly afterwards.</div>
<div class="message">
<br />
<img alt=" " height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/cir20hxci9muewu/AACVWtaUfCUO7NtG1X77bEfja?raw=1" style="max-width: 100%;" width="400" /> <br />
<br />
The
French are on the up; another cracking volley fells the Hun automaton
carrying the artefact; a German engineer rushes to fix it. Seizing his
chance a fezzed fanatic charges in to also grab the artefact but is
knocked down as you would be if you are hit by a 4 foot long winder key used
as club. Distracted by the attack the engineer can’t fix the robot but
legs it with the artefact himself.</div>
<div class="message">

<img alt=" " height="225" src="https://www.dropbox.com/sc/1brc2d6n940rdwu/AACvIF5XAnlkPsDZPrtbuQT4a?raw=1" style="max-width: 100%;" width="400" /><br />
<br />
<br />
In conclusion:<br />
<br />
The
one surviving Hun was last seen climbing up a rope ladder into the
clouds and into a waiting Zeppelin, clutching the artefact and with some
sharp words for his dummkopf logistics officer.<br />
<br />
Mimi is now
Mrs Croissant of 64 Rue d’Argent, a loyal wife at the Colonel's court
martial for losing the artefact, though with a yearning still for her
lost El She-bab. Mouffin was awarded the Medal d'Honneur and a bag of
carrots. <br />
<br />
The Police are too busy extracting themselves and
their prisoners from the clutches of the undead to yet mourn the loss of
Sherly and the Doc.</div>
<div class="message">

<br />
Finally
a highly unseasonal dust filled whirlwind passed over Brighton heading
south. Some claimed to have heard cackling as it passed and that a fez
fell from the sky. Such reports have been dismissed by the Home Office…<br />
<br />

<b>New Ticketing System for Salute 2015 </b><br />
<br />
Hi everyone, some info on the tickets for Salute 2015: <br />
<br />
As part of our plans to reduce queuing to a minimum we are using an E-ticket system. If you buy your ticket in advance from <a href="http://www.salute.co.uk/salute/salute-2015/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.salute.co.uk/salute/salute-2015/</a> then the cost is £10
(that's slightly less than last year).<br />
<br />
If you buy on the door it is £15
cash only. So buy in advance and spend that £5 on some nice stuff from
the traders!</div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Why are we doing this? </b><br />
<br />
This year has seen the introduction of a new ticketing system for the
South London Warlords show Salute, what follows is a short explanation
to try and shed some light on this change.<br />
<br />
From my point of view I
think probably the main reason this change was implemented was because
we needed something that would help get people into the show much
quicker and easier than our normal queuing system.<br />
<br />
Over the past few years the queues have been getting longer and harder to deal with,<span class="text_exposed_show">
once the doors opened at 10am we then had to get the advanced ticket
holders in and then we had to start to collect the money for all those
paying on the day!<br /> </span><br />
<span class="text_exposed_show">This has been an issue that we have wanted to try and deal with for many years.</span><br />
<div class="text_exposed_show">
<br />
It was suggested that I look into E-ticketing as a way forward to help
with this issue, and after a few meetings and a lot of scratching of
heads we thought it would be good to at least try this and see if it
helps with this years show, but for it to work at all we felt we needed a
separate hall to do this in.<br />
Well after some negotiating with
ExCel we managed to get a separate queuing hall at one end of our normal
show hall, and with making an entrance in the temporary wall system we
have taken the queues off the boulevard, what this means is that this
year visitors will enter the show from this queuing hall.<br />
<br />
In this
queuing hall we will have people with scanners for the pre-paid
advanced tickets and a section to take the cash on the day ( hopefully
from just after 7am!! ), this will mean that at 10am, when we normally
open the doors, everyone in the queuing hall will have had their tickets
checked or paid their money and will be ready to enter the show!!<br />
<br />
We hope...<br />
<br />
Hope you all have a great show.<br />

Regiment drove into the sleepy Wadi within which nestled the desert
enclave of D’Alweech, it's hard sandy valley floor broken only by low
buildings and the reflection of the stars in flat pools of clear,
life-giving water...<br /><br />Their plan was to move into the village
before Major Zeid of the Hashemite National Army could emplace his
forces but, as the dawn broke, they found their opposition was made of
sterner stuff than they imagined.</i>The fight was on!<br />
<br />
Using <b>Hammer’s Slammers: The Crucible </b><a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">rules</a>, John’s forces were a detachment of the <a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pdf/Stewart_regiment_15mm_sheet.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Stewart Regiment</a>
with a couple of heavy Apollo hover tanks, some lighter Artemis APCs
and Kunitsa APCs towing anti tank weapons and a Katy self propelled
mortar, all lead by their charismatic Major FitzAlan. Alan’s <a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pdf/Hashemite1_15mm_sheet.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hashemites</a>,
including a Desert Raider detachment under Zeid and a regular Army unit
using Assad I and Assad II APCs and a Guntruck and an MLRS, along with
many Gecko, Zebo and Goanna lighter, high mobility 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles
with the Desert Raider’s being especially fast in their movements.<br />
<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>The Stewarts Regimental Despatches: </b><br />
<br />
The
first turn saw an exchange of fire that resulted in losses on both
sides: the Stewarts lost the main weapon from an MBT and the Hashemites a
couple of lighter vehicles as they both moved forwards. Zeid’s men
tried to advance into good firing positions while the Stewart's towed
anti-tank weapons tried to unhitch and deploy in a position with a
decent field of fire: consequentially, the Hashemites lost their
gun-truck’s turret to fire from one of these weapons.<br />
<br />
Turn three
saw more advances of the Hashemites as the Major’s raiders swept through
the difficult ground, making light work of the difficult terrain
through training, and also using the road to push their lighter buggies
to the max. The National Army’s MLRS started finding targets from it’s
rear position and succeeded in destroying one of the deployed Stewart AT
guns and suppressing the crew on the other. In revenge for it having
destroyed a building with units of Desert Raider troops inside, Zeid's jeeps - using hypersonic missiles - took out the offending Artemis APC
complete with their infantry who had not had the chance to debuss or
even bail out as the vehicle was totally wrecked.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/zaid_and_his_men.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/zaid_and_his_men.jpg" height="640" width="475" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Major Zeid supervises the Hashemite Desert Raiders advance down Desolation Road from his beloved halftrack (closest)</i></div>
<br />
As Zeid’s men
worked one flank, Stewart – from the cupola of his tank – led a charge
up the other, rapid firing his main gun to the point of wrecking the
breech but taking out a missile firing Assad II. However, in reply, e
paid the ultimate sacrifice.<br />
<br />
By turn 4 the Stewarts were down to a
Lieutenant and were really losing the will to fight. Their positive
results included mortaring Zaid’s vehicle and blowing the tracks off,
forcing him to continue on foot rather than stay in a smouldering target
but the Stewart Katy Mortar received return fire from the Assad MLRS
which took out it’s Mortar crew and weapon but gave the on board
infantry a chance to leap from the vehicle. <br />
<br />
The final Stewart
Artemis APC did some damage firing discretely though gaps in the
buildings at several Goanna missile launchers and getting kills as its
reward. It had to reverse rapidly around a corner seeing incoming
missiles heaed its way, but met more Ntional Army forces when it did. It
succumbed eventually to having it’s side ripped open by a gatling
Railgun mounted on a Gecko though, to be honest, if the Railgun hadn’t
got it, the chaps with the buzzbomb (encouraged with a ‘confire’ to up
their quality level) would probably have done so.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Lt Ahmed's Hashemite Regular Army units move off to cover the D'Alweech bypass road</i></div>
<br />
By Turn 6 the
Stewarts were down to 50% and were about to take a morale test. Zeid’s
raiders had lost more than 50%, but took a test and most of them stayed
(including the now ambulatory Major!). The next turn, with Major
FitzAlan dead and the Hashemites guaranteed to win the initiative, the
Stewarts capitulated and hoped not to suffer a grisly fate.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>An excerpt from the book "Desert Raiders - the life of Zeid", Chapter 17 by Kemal Ahmed:</b><br />
<br />
<i>The orders were clear
– an enemy formation, probably mercenaries, was moving across the
desert to capture the small town of D’Alweech and disrupt the long main
road through the desert. Nicknamed Desolation Road. it was a vital
arterial for the Hashemite forces. “You need to secure the town, at all
costs. Time is of the essence" I was told. "We have a small and
fairly raw unit of National Army troops that were moving towards
D'Alweech to fit out, they will also be under your command for this
mission” </i><br />
<br />
The Raiders were designed for hit and run operations
in the enemy’s rear, and the irony of sitting tight and defending a town
from an enemy’s raiders in their own rear was not lost on Zeid. They
set off at full speed that night, meeting up with the regular Army
detachment in the early morning. The detachment was still building up,
and comprised of barely trained troops with only a ragbag of elements - a
12-tube MLRS artillery truck, a pair of big Assad II 8x8 wheel armoured
cars with medium railguns and heavy Anti Tank missiles respectively, a
depleted Recce troop of a Gecko armoured jeep and Goanna light armoured
car, and the infantry platoon in 2 big Assad I 8x8 APCs. Zeid and the
Army commander, one Lt. Ahmed, looked at the map in the dawn light.
“There is a bypass road round the north of the town, I want you to
cover that and prevent the enemy from coming round our rear that way.
I’ll take my force into the town at full speed. Allah willing, we can
hole up before the enemy arrive, then I’ll call in your troops and we
can dig in properly.” said Zeid.<br />
<br />
And so it began. Zeid’s troop of
jeeps raced down the road at full pelt with the recce infantry squads
hanging on for dear life, while the Goanna 6x6 light armoured car troop
moved up more cautiously behind through the broken scrubland. Zeid sent
his AT missile armed Goanna armoured car troop on a sweep south of the
town in case anything came from that direction. He stayed behind the
advance, listening to his troops’ reports as they moved. “Nothing
visible yet” came the response from the jeeps as they pulled into the
town centre, followed shortly by “oh sh*t”.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/goannas_on_the_road2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/goannas_on_the_road2.jpg" height="476" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> Hashemite Desert Raider's light armoured cars advance towards D'Alweech, they were soon to come under fire</i></div>
<br />
Lt Ahmed meanwhile
advanced north-eastwards as ordered. Spotting dust on the far East side
of town, his 'scopes showed tracked gun tractors deploying heavy guns
into position. He ordered the MLRS to fire at these guns. The first
rocket volley blew one gun and its crew to smithereens. The other gun
crew was a bit quicker off the mark, threw themselves to the ground and
only just survived, but to no avail, the subsequent rocket volley did
for them too. High Fives all round from Ahmed’s excitable rookies
stopped abruptly as they in turn came under fire from the tractor-APCs
and a hovertank that have into view. At this the big Assad armoured car,
with its heavy Anti tank missiles primed, let fly – and the enemy
hovertank’s main gun turret was blown off to a weird angle – it was
clearly out of action for some time! <br />
<br />
But again, no sooner had
the rookies started to cheer, than another enemy hovertank and two well
armed hover-AFVs came thundering down the northern bypass road, and a
whole world of fire and noise came down on the Hashemite troops as the
enemy opened up on them. Before Lt Ahmed could do anything, his recce
armoured car blew up a few hundred yards in front of him, followed by
the gun-armed Assad armoured car losing first its turret and then its
hull. His APC’s scuttled into the brush for cover while the AT-missile
Assad launched a pair of missiles at the tank, and then a second
straight after. The second pair had been too hastily fired however, one
missile detonated soon after leaving the launcher, wrecking it. The crew
were fortunately safe in the armoured car, and once their ears stopped
ringing and the smoke cleared they saw the enemy tank on fire on the
road, and debris scattered everywhere – it had taken a direct hit from
multiple missiles. The enemy AFVS following had disappeared into cover.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>....but comes to grief from the <strike>lucky</strike> accurate shooting of Hashemite regular army elements </i></div>
<br />
<br />
In
the meantime, Zeid’s recce infantry had come under very heavy fire in
the town, one occupied building collapsing. The jeeps moved further down
the road, wanting to get side shots at approaching enemy with their
light AT missiles. Behind them the A/C troop was now rolling down the
road into town, when side fire took out one car. The other two raced for
the cover of their infantry’s perimeter area<br />
<br />
Lt. Ahmed's troops
saw these fire flashes, which identified the position of the hiding
enemy AFVs – and his rookie recces in the Gecko jeep, yelling “Allahu
Akbar” hared off, bouncing over the desert sand, raced up beside the AFV
and gave it point-blank volley from its gatling railgun and the
buzz-bomb (bazooka) carrying infantry in the back. This AFV blew up in a
huge sheet of oily flame. The Gecko then spotted the other AFV and went
swinging across the desert to get another close in side shot, knocking
it out too. <br />
<br />
Zeid in the meantime rolled down Desolation Road
towards the town, when a heavy mortar volley blew a track off his trusty
halftrack. “£$%” he yelled, ordering someone to come and fetch him. “
%^&*”he bellowed again when no-one seemed around to do so. A second
round of mortar fire put wings on his feet and he hopped out his vehicle
and started <s>running like a scalded cat</s> walking into town with head held high.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/desert_raiders_debuss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/desert_raiders_debuss.jpg" height="640" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Desert Raiders enter D'Alweech on Desolation Road, infantry are moving into the buildings - fierce urban fighting was soon to follow</i> </div>
<br />
That
no one was around was because Zeid’s Raiders were in desperate straits
in the town – their lightly armoured vehicles were slugging it out with
tough enemy AFVs and well armed infantry, and they were taking heavy
losses - but despite this they hung on (great morale dice...). They
were also extremely grateful when the spotters switched the MLRS fire
from the enemy's artillery assets to the enemy attacking the town. That,
with Lt Ahmed’s infantry platoon also moving into town made the enemy
realise that their position was becoming untenable, and they retired.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/zaids_long_walk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hammers-slammers.com/pics/zaids_long_walk.jpg" height="400" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Major Zeid takes a hike - walking down Desolation Road into town, his untracked halftrack left behind him </i></div>
<br />
Zeid
knew that doctrine demanded he pursue the foe, but with 7 out of his 11
armoured cars KO’d and half his Raiders killed or wounded and the rest
exhausted by the street fighting, all he really had to chase with were 2
lumbering 8x8 APCs. It had been heavy price to pay to secure the down.
Ahmed’s troops were cock-a-hoop, crowing that they had driven off the
enemy almost single handedly, plus a mere Gecko jeep had destroyed two
APC’s. Not bad for a bunch of greenhorns… freecloudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02733549306046954628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1867156477596232087.post-81521779849876422052014-11-20T00:11:00.000+00:002014-11-20T00:16:10.831+00:00Tarzan vs the MummyThe lost Johnny Weissmuller / Lon Chaney masterpiece...? <br />
<br />
(An On Her Majesty's Service game at SLW)<br />
<br />
The evil/misunderstood priest Tutanim and his fez
wearing cultists were searching the until recently lost temple site of
Sidi Jamses seeking to resurrect Mumra ... (you get the picture..).
As this would be a Bad Thing for British rule in Esat Africa & the Middle East, and
therefore a Good Thing for the Kaiser, Col von Strudel and his colonial Marines are supporting this effort.<br />
<br />
Sidi Jamses
is close to the jungles borders of Tarzan's domain so he, Jane, his
giant Gorilla step dad Kerchek, a witch doctor and some native warriors
aim to stop Tutanim. <br />
<br />
As both sides moved foward to secure the
three possible burial sites of Mumra, the Hun formed a firing line and
waited for the mass native charge... Only the sneaky savages insisted on
using cover, damned unsporting - yah?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUyWlxa_LCnLP2P8lYbOhi9aG4ynaDhXeU6Y2WYZ9lDz6suEtyb4xkRTDxzDeyYsvRIaglxh_0MaVRg2TR8J5MqW8gmNJVqP5_KNVdUkghNKvcutRm2pX44-UdytKTO1xd3EAl6t9m9lo/s1600/Tarzan+vs+Evil+Egyptians.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUyWlxa_LCnLP2P8lYbOhi9aG4ynaDhXeU6Y2WYZ9lDz6suEtyb4xkRTDxzDeyYsvRIaglxh_0MaVRg2TR8J5MqW8gmNJVqP5_KNVdUkghNKvcutRm2pX44-UdytKTO1xd3EAl6t9m9lo/s1600/Tarzan+vs+Evil+Egyptians.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The action at Sidi James begins</i>......</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
On one flank Kerchak
pushes forward and surprises the Hun as he crests a low sand dune.
Four nervous marines shoot and miss. One with a partial view shoots
(courtesy of my over generous offer to Paul ‘go on then, will need a 10
on D10 to hit anyway…’). It ricochets off a piece of rubble and von
Strudel’s sword handle, straight into Kerchek’s head - dead! von
Strudel works out if he will need a bigger trophy room. <br />
<br />
An
enraged Tarzan and friends charge forward, only to be slowed by a
fearsome but very localised sandstorm, - some say formed in the shape of
human head - that also limits visibility and shooting. Yes, Tutanim
has summoned the dark forces of the desert to aid his quest (even
though he didn’t roll the pluck roll he should have mutter mutter.) <br />
<br />
In
return the Witchdoctor with his pet snake Kaa can be heard tunefully
chanting ‘Trust in me, just in me, Shut your eyes and trust in me… ‘
but on three occasions fails to Memersise the nearest marine - Thick
Gunther – whose small brain is obviously a tricky target. <br />
<br />
A
general melee starts as the natives make contact – one brave warrior
holds of both the evil priest and the cultists again and again as pistol
bullets and swords richochet off his zebra skin shield. Jane makes a
nuisance of herself with her Erudite Wit – this is a ‘Talent’ obviously
designed for the likes of Sherlock Holmes, where an opponent is
distracted by clever word play and finds you harder to hit. However we
decided that is was Jungle Rhyming Slang – Erudite Wit = Great Pair of
... and that her curves were the distraction.<br />
<br />
In combat,
though out-numbered Tarzan knocks down von Strudel twice and then
finally kills him. Elsewhere more warriors die but the tide has
turned. Tutanim suddenly find himself very alone and calls it a day. <br />
<br />
But now She Who Must Be Obeyed has noted the disturbance in the eternal
lifeforce as these (j arthur) rank amateurs sought to raise Mumra.....freecloudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02733549306046954628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1867156477596232087.post-10504245614295780722014-11-11T15:25:00.000+00:002014-11-11T16:23:53.509+00:00Back in business<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With Salute 2015 now only over the horizon, it's time to wake up the Blog from its summer hibernation and get it ready and fit to serve, bringing news of our and other clubs' preparations, vendor releases and offers, and news of the day itself.<br />
<br />
The Warlords have not been in hibernation of course, there is much going on - quarterly painting competitions, our annual Warhammer 40 tourney is already on Round 4, the 1st Kings of War tournament ended in August and the 2nd is about to begin, and the American Civil War campaign is in full swing with Johnny Reb still riding rampant while the Goddamyankees try and sort themselves out.<br />
<br />
And that's just the tournaments. As a club we play a huge range of games every week (see below), which we will start to highlight as well on these pages over the next months. We also play a party game once a month where we try out games for people who want to get into them - and not just club members, come along if you fancy joining the Warlords<br />
<br />
In fact come along any Monday night, we can't gurarantee a game that night but we can pretty much guarantee we can find you someone who wants to play you fairly soon after you come.<br />

<i>(Templars - Club paintimg competition - Historical category)</i></div>
<br />
Right now, the club is playing a <i>lot</i> of: <br />
<br />
- 40K (transitioning to 7th Ed) <br />
- Kings of War (Fantasy)<br />
- Dystopian Wars (Steampunk Naval)<br />
- Fistful of TOWS (6mm modern & WW2 ) <br />
<br />
Something you see pretty much every week is:<br />
:<br />
- General de Brigade (Napoleonics, mainly 15mm)<br />
- Rapid Fire & Bolt Action (WW2)<br />
- Spaceships (various rules eg X-Wing, Firestorm Armada)<br />
- "Hard" Sci Fi big games (Hammers Slammers & FUBAR are popular right now)<br />
- Warmachine<br />
- American Civil War (various rules, mainly 15mm)<br />
- Sci Fi skirmish (various, eg Infinity, Dust) <br />
<br />
Things seen c monthly over the last few months include <br />
<br />
- Black Powder (Seven Year War mainly)<br />
- SAGA (Dark Age skirmish)<br />
- Ancients (Various rules - Hail Caesar most used at the moment it seems)<br />
- WW1 dogfighting<br />
- Space Hulking<br />
<br />
<br />
...and a Long Tail of games played every so often by their devotees, recent ones from memory include 1/2400 Pre Dreadnoughts; Ogre, 54mm Songs of Drums & Shakoes Napoleonics, French & Indian Wars, WW2 1939 in 10mm....the back catalogue of what 50-odd (and I mean odd ) regulars play is quite staggering.... (everything waxes and wanes, what is hot now will be languishing in a few months time and vice versa - and then there are the new games people are building up for - the Martians are rumoyed to be on their way)<br />
